Asbestos removal · Ipswich and Suffolk
Safe removal and disposal of asbestos from homes, garages, sheds, farms and commercial buildings, carried out under the Control of Asbestos Regulations.
Asbestos was widely used in UK buildings until it was banned in 1999, so any home or commercial building built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it. It is only dangerous when disturbed, which is why it matters most when you are renovating, demolishing a garage or clearing out an old building.
In Ipswich, the most common asbestos we deal with is asbestos cement: corrugated garage and shed roofs, wall panels, soffits, gutters and old water tanks. We also deal with floor tiles, textured ceiling coatings and other materials found during refurbishments.
The work we carry out depends on the type of asbestos. Lower-risk materials such as asbestos cement can be removed by trained, non-licensed operatives following strict controls. Higher-risk materials such as pipe lagging, sprayed coatings and asbestos insulating board must be removed by a contractor licensed by the Health and Safety Executive, and we arrange that work through licensed partners.

Breaking, drilling, sanding or jet-washing asbestos releases fibres. If you think something contains asbestos, leave it alone until it has been tested.
A small sample can be taken and sent to an accredited laboratory, usually with results in a few days. See asbestos surveys and testing.
Sheets are dampened, unbolted and lowered whole wherever possible, then double-wrapped in heavy-duty polythene and labelled. Breaking sheets is avoided because it releases fibres.
Asbestos is hazardous waste. It must be taken by a registered carrier to a site permitted to accept it, with a hazardous waste consignment note. You receive a copy for your records.
Some household recycling centres accept small amounts of wrapped asbestos cement from householders by arrangement. For anything more, or for any trade waste, use a specialist service.
We confirm what the material is before any work.

Corrugated grey cement roofs on garages and sheds built before 2000 often contain asbestos. The only way to be sure is to have a sample tested.
Homeowners are not banned from removing small amounts of asbestos cement, but it must be done carefully and disposed of correctly. Using a trained contractor is safer and avoids disposal problems.
It is lower risk than other types because the fibres are bound in cement, but it releases fibres if broken, drilled or weathered badly.
Pipe lagging and sprayed coatings are licensed work. We arrange removal through HSE-licensed contractors.
